Fodmi estimates FODMAP content from published food composition data. It is not medical advice and has not been reviewed by a dietitian.

Fodmi is a food and symptom journal. It is not a medical device, and it doesn’t diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), SIBO or food intolerances.

See a doctor first

Gut symptoms can have many causes. Before you start a low FODMAP diet, see a doctor to rule out conditions such as coeliac disease and inflammatory bowel disease. A low FODMAP diet is meant to be temporary and is best done with a registered dietitian, who can guide the elimination and reintroduction phases and make sure you still eat well.

Get medical help promptly if you have blood in your stool, unexplained weight loss, a fever, persistent vomiting, severe or worsening pain, trouble swallowing, symptoms that wake you at night, or a change in bowel habits after age 50.

How Fodmi’s estimates work

  • FODMAP amounts come from published laboratory measurements, USDA FoodData Central and national food composition tables from France (CIQUAL), Germany (BLS) and Japan (MEXT).
  • Where a FODMAP group hasn’t been measured for a food, Fodmi either estimates it from closely related foods and says so, or reports it as unknown.
  • Fodmi compares amounts with low FODMAP cut-off values published in scientific research. These cut-offs are still awaiting review by a dietitian.
  • Real foods vary with variety, ripeness, processing, recipe and portion. Photo and voice recognition can misidentify ingredients.

Your own tolerance may differ from any published value. The patterns Fodmi shows between foods and symptoms are correlations from your own journal, not proof that a food causes your symptoms.

Not for emergencies

Fodmi doesn’t monitor your health and can’t respond to emergencies. If you think you’re having a medical emergency, call your local emergency number.
